I see some roofing
contractors are hungry for work.
I suppose that one could
argue that you SHOULD replace all the shingles because the
felt was omitted. And you SHOULD also floss your teeth three
times a day, check the tire pressure on your car every week,
check the oil every time you fill up with gas, never exceed
the posted speed limit, and send your state the sales tax on
every mail-order purchase you make. But the real questions
are: Is it necessary and is it worth it to
replace the shingles just to install felt?
I have heard and read about
some debate within the building trades about the necessity of
roofing felt. Many people feel it serves no purpose once the
shingles are installed. Yet some people contend that the felt
acts like a second line of defense to deter leakage if water
gets behind the shingles. I'm not sure how well a giant piece
of Swiss cheese is going to protect your house from water
damage, because the felt is riddled with holes once the
shingles are installed, and I highly doubt that the felt seals
very well around the nails.
If your roof isn't leaking, I
see no reason for concern.
