Wider-Than-Normal Counters

I have noticed at the home improvement centers that ALL kitchen
countertops are approx 2 ft deep. I am building a custom home and would prefer 30 inch countertops. Are there any sources for deeper prefab countertops?

Thanks,
Gary P
.

There are custom counter-top shops all over the place. Check the yellow pages or ask a local lumber yard (other than Home Depot or Lowes).

But then... some lumber yards and home centers can order wider counters, counters with rolled edges on front and back (for peninsulas) and all sorts of counters with decorative hardwood bands around the edges.

Or you can custom-make your own counter top with a hardwood edge, but that requires some precise cutting and routing. There are some good books on the subject at the Fine Homebuilding section of Taunton Press.

There are all sorts of special counters available, but what you'll see at the big-box chain home centers is usually just the high-volume stuff.
