Low Spot In The Sub-Floor
I have found your web site to be very
helpful as I renovate my house in Needham, Massachusetts. I have a
question about installing wood strip flooring that I am hoping you can
help me with.
The sub-flooring is the old 1x sheathing with wide gaps like you mentioned
in your web site article regarding installing new wood strip flooring.
Part of my sub-floor was rotted and I patched it with new plywood
sheathing that is about 1/16" thinner than the 1x sub-flooring.
Now, I am worried about the height change and whether it will telegraph
through the finish floor. Of course, in my zeal to get the job done, I
nailed it down before totally thinking it through. Is the height
difference a problem?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Paul D.
The
small height difference could show up as a slight dip in the floor...
then again if your flooring is 3/4" thick it might span the gap
just fine.
There are "floor leveling" materials available (I think I've
seen them at Home Depot) that are just what you need. These products are
basically a cement-like filler that is troweled on. You could also use
products like Durham's Water Putty or other wood filler materials that
dry (or set) quickly.
Furthermore, you could use any thin sheet material, including cardboard
(the non-corrugated type), multiple layers of tar paper, etc.
Or, if a low spot appears in the floor, you could call it
"character". It could be the source of much fun. For instance,
you could stand in the room and tell your wife "Honey, there's a
big dip right in the middle of this floor" and she would get a kick
out of your humble, self-deprecating style of humor.
