Installing Wood Flooring In A Mobile
Home
I want to put in a wood floor. I live in
a mobile home but have old
linoleum on the floor and want to know 1) how to get it off2) and what
preparations I need to do to put a new floor in.
Thank you
It's
likely that you will not be able to install a conventional wood
floor in a mobile home.
Many manufactured homes use a steel framing system for the floor
structure... all the joists are steel, and plywood or particle board
sub-floor sheathing is attached to the steel.
The normal method for installing wood floors is to drive the nails or
staples into the joists. You might be able to drive the fasteners into
the floor sheathing... but eventually you are going to hit steel and
*ouch*.
There are edge-glued flooring products available that are not fastened
down. These are free-floating, and usually are installed on a thin sheet
of foam over the old floor.
You may not have to remove the old linoleum or vinyl floor. Perhaps you
should look into some of the laminate floor products like Pergo,
Wilsonart or Armstrong. Some of these just snap together. I haven't
tried them, but the sure do sell a lot, so people must like them.
Ask around at flooring stores or even at Home Depot and Lowes. Following
the manufacturers instructions is crucial.
