Every Grill Needs A Home

My husband is taking on a project in which we can't find any guidance to and was hoping you could help? He wants to build a cabinet to house our outdoor grill? His idea is to "frame" in the grill, then cover the outside with stone work. His concern is how to make it "fire safe"?

Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Theresa

Is that one of those mounted- permanently- on-a-pedestal grills? I seen pictures of those, but I've never done anything with one.

I guess the same rules would apply that go with regular grills:

- Keep it away from the house.
- Keep all combustible materials away, probably by 6 to 12 inches, but maybe more.
- Give the heat a way to escape.

I would look into some of these ideas:

Build a cabinet of steel studs and Durock. This would be truly fire-proof, and reasonably water-proof as well. You can apply tile to Durock, or just plaster it with masonry cement for that stucco look. You could do counter-tops of tile and everything.

Look for some stainless steel cabinets or shelving. Try a restaurant supply outlet that sells used equipment. That stuff is pricey, but it will last forever and everyone will think you bought a $5,000 Sub-Zero brand outdoor grill. You could put cabinets on either side of the grill and custom-build a counter top (steel studs and Durock) to connect the whole shebang. Build a short wall on the back side and tile it and it'll look like a million bucks, don't you think?

You could build something out of brick. But that's kind of heavy and needs it's own foundation.
